Vegan Wine
What It Means and Why LOLA Wines Are Vegan
Many people assume wine is always vegan. After all, it starts with grapes and fermentation. But some traditional winemaking methods use animal-derived products during the clarification process. At LOLA, every wine is made without animal products, making the entire portfolio vegan.
Why Some Wines Are Not Vegan
After fermentation, young wine often contains tiny suspended particles such as yeast cells, proteins, and tannins. To clarify the wine more quickly, many producers add fining agents that bind to these particles and help them settle out.
Traditionally, some of these fining agents come from animal sources. Examples include egg whites, milk protein (casein), gelatin derived from animal collagen, and isinglass made from fish bladders. While these substances do not remain in the finished wine in meaningful amounts, their use means the wine cannot be considered vegan.
A wine is considered vegan when no animal-derived fining agents are used during production.
How LOLA Makes Vegan Wines
At LOLA, wines are made using two approaches, both entirely vegan.
The small-production Artisanal Series wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. This means no fining agents are used at all. The wines settle naturally during aging and are bottled with all the texture and complexity developed in the barrel.
The classic wine lineup, including Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Albariño, and Rosé, is clarified using bentonite. Bentonite is a naturally occurring volcanic clay that removes excess proteins from the wine without using any animal products. It is widely used in organic winemaking and leaves no residue in the finished wine.
Why Vegan Winemaking Matters
Choosing vegan fining methods is part of a broader philosophy of minimal intervention and responsible farming. Using natural or non-animal materials keeps the winemaking process simple and transparent, allowing the vineyard and vintage to speak more clearly in the finished wine.
For those who follow a vegan lifestyle, this ensures the wine aligns with their values. For others, it simply reflects a careful approach to winemaking that prioritizes natural ingredients and thoughtful production.
Across the entire portfolio, every LOLA wine is made without animal products from vineyard to bottle.
